PRELUDE: 1995

In 1995 a group of musicians from Galway with an interest in early music (including The Good Ladies of Galway and members of Cois Cladaigh), went to what was then Ireland’s only early music festival in Lismore, Co. Waterford. The excitement generated by the festival concerts, especially that of the colourful and versatile York Waits, resulted in the founding of The Galway Early Music Festival.  Why not bring this great music to the medieval town of Galway?

The first Festival took place in May, 1996. From a small beginning where only one international ensemble appeared, to a busy compact Festival featuring Irish, European and American performers and ensembles, the Galway Early Music Festival has consistently presented an exciting mix of music, dance, costume and colour.

This exhibition is by no means complete, but gives a taste of the Galway Early Music Festival down through 25 years.
We invite you to explore the posters and photos and videos from 25 years of early music in Galway.
