IGNORE THE DATE AND TIME – YOU CAN DO THESE MOBILE TOURS ANYTIME BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER THE FESTIVAL!
Galway Early Music has commissioned two mobile apps featuring both early music and medieval Galway. Be introduced to medieval Galway and the music you might have heard there in a walking tour, or go on a ghost hunt that combines music and ghostbusting! Both apps are free to download, but make sure that you have free wifi to download the app. Also be sure that your phone is fully charged. Headphones are strongly recommended to get the best experience.
GEMF MUSICAL TOUR OF MEDIEVAL GALWAY
Galway Early Music’s Musical Walking Tour of Medieval Galway is time-travelling at its best. Spanish merchant Captain Moreno has arrived in Galway, a town he knows well and loves, with a shipment of wine. He takes his shipmate (that’s you!) on a tour of this lively town. Along the way you visit some of the famous sites in Galway and hear the sounds and the music of a medieval town.
Unlike any walking tour you’ve done before, this tour plays with time and your perceptions of your surroundings. Captain Moreno’s comments to you, his shipmate, place you firmly in medieval Galway, and the site-appropriate historical music and soundscapes increase this perception, yet you are looking at modern Galway. The audio experience is enhanced by illustrations from Peigi Dooley’s map of Medieval Galway and information about the music you are hearing on the screen of your phone. More than a tour, this is an imaginative and creative experience.
Using smartphone technology, GPS and a free app called 7Scenes, Máiréad Ni Chróinín has devised this new and creative way to experience the past, which is available any day, any time for visitors and Galwegians alike. For instructions on how to download and do the tour view the video or pick up an instruction card in the Museum or the Hall of the Red Earl, Druid Lane.
CAROLAN’S LOST TUNE – GHOST HUNT
Hear ye, hear ye! The ghost of Carolan, a famous Irish harper, needs your help. His most haunting tune has been stolen by four ancient and malevolent ghosts. Do you dare hunt them down and find the missing melody?
Carolan’s Last Tune is an outdoors game that turns your smartphone into a spooky paranormal detection device. First use the Radar to scan for mysterious phenomena and get close to one, then scan for it using the Viewer and take its photo. Find all the paranormal activity to complete the game. Be prepared for surprises! The audio is great and works best with headphones, but you can play without headphones too.
This app was designed by Máiréad Ní Chróinín and developed by Haunted Planet. You can download the app from the Haunted Planet website.
