Artist Biography

Dr Karen Loomis is Assistant Director of the Historical Harp Society of Ireland (HHSI), and is a specialist in musical instrument research, with expertise in the historical harps of Ireland and Scotland. She is dedicated to helping harp builders and musicians rediscover the sound world of the historical harps of Ireland and Scotland, using modern technology to unlock the secrets of the surviving instruments. Karen has conducted groundbreaking studies of the Queen Mary and Lamont harps of the National Museum of Scotland, and recently led a project funded by the Arts Council of Ireland to study the 18th-century Hollybrook harp for the HHSI. She enjoys sharing her knowledge and passion for these harps at workshops, and is a presenter and administrator for Acadamh na gCláirseach–Academy of Early Irish Harp and Scoil na gCláirseach–Festival of Early Irish Harp.
