Don’t Judge: Saucy Tales at the Crossroads of Story and Song

Artist Biography

Matthew P. Thomson is a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University College Dublin. Prior to this Fellowship, he received his doctorate from the University of Oxford and held a Fitzjames Research Fellowship at Merton College, Oxford. His current project examines the close interactions between narratives about music and sexuality in thirteenth-century France, exploring the impact that these intertwined narratives had on French literary and musical production. As a singer, he has performed extensively with choirs in Oxford and London, including Sansara and the Choir of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford. He is active as a lieder recitalist and oratorio soloist, including Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin, Bach’s Matthäus Passion, and Haydn’s Creation. In the operatic sphere, he created the role of Rothschild in Marco Galvani’s Rothschild’s Violin, commissioned by New Chamber Opera. Other operatic experience includes Acis (Acis and Galatea), Don Basilio (Le Nozze di Figaro), and Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte).
