Artist Biography

Director of the Witold Lutosławski National Forum of Music in Wrocław, conductor and teacher, one of the most active musicians and promoters of musical life in Poland. He is a graduate of the Department of Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music at the Academy of Music in Wrocław. In 2013, he received a postdoctoral degree, and in 2021 the title of professor and is currently employed at his alma mater. In 2005, he became Director of the Wrocław Philharmonic and the International Festival Wratislavia Cantans and effected structural and profile transformation of both institutions, finally merging them into the National Forum of Music. The opening of the new venue of the NFM – which was constructed thanks to his ideas and efforts – was honoured with the Coryphaeus of Polish Music 2016 award in the Event of the Year category.

As Director of the NFM, he created new artistic ensembles, i.a. the NFM Choir, Wrocław Baroque Orchestra and the NFM Boys’ Choir. From 2011 to 2021, Andrzej Kosendiak served as Chairman of the Board of the Society of Polish Philharmonics, and from 2012 to 2016 as Vice Chairman of the Council for Artistic Institutions, an advisory body to Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

Music of the past is of particular interest to Andrzej Kosendiak. In 1985, he founded the ensemble Collegio di Musica Sacra, and in 2012 Wrocław Baroque Ensemble, of which he is Artistic Director. He has recorded previously unknown works from Wrocław University Library and Strasbourg Library, works of Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki (awarded Wrocław Music Prize), Bartłomiej Pękiel, Stanisław Sylwester Szarzyński, Jacek Różycki, and others; most of these recordings were nominated for Fryderyk awards: Mielczewski II won a Fryderyk 2019 (Album of the Year – Early Music), and Mikołaj Zieleński triumphed in the same category, winning a Fryderyk in 2021. The CD with works by Zieleński was also nominated for International Classical Music Awards 2021 in the Baroque Vocal category. In 2022, new recordings directed by him were released: a vinyl disc with Gorczycki’s Completorium and  the CD Marcin Józef Żebrowski – Vesperae in Visitatione Beatae Mariae Virginis (awarded Fryderyk 2023 and nominated for Opus Klassik 2023 in the categories: Conductor of the Year and Ensemble of the Year). In 2023, the album recorded with Marcin Szelest – Musica liturgica – was published, featuring all the preserved works by Marcin Leopolita and other works for organ.
