The Early Music for Young Musicians Project seeks to introduce early music to young musicians as part of their cultural heritage and as an area of music that is not only beautiful but also fun and challenging.
In co-operation with Galway music schools and youth choirs, Galway Early Music organises workshops with professional early music performers. These workshops culminate in a concert combining participants in Early Music for Young Musicians, GEM’s Adult Ensemble and the facilitators during the Galway Early Music Festival.
Galway Early Music initiated the project in 2016. Our wonderful workshop leaders have been Laoise O'Brien (recorder), Eamon Sweeney (baroque guitar) and Malachy Robinson (viol) and Jenny Robinson (recorder). Working with Athenry Music School, St Nicholas Schola Cantorum and, in 2022, Coole Music and Arts, our project leaders have encouraged an interest in performing medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music through informal, fun and informative workshops that lead to the public performance of the music they've learned during the annual Galway Early Music Festival.
